For some or the other reason, parents started thinking that it is solely the teacher's responsibility to teach their children, but the most important life lessons, like to teach your children life skills comes from the parents.
These articles on teach your children life skills are not only for homeschool families, but for ALL PARENTS:
If you are not homeschooling your children and have a full time job, you might ask but where are you going to get the time to teach your children, I have an answer for this that you won't believe:
you are already teaching your children.
They are looking at the way you handle other people (do you do it with respect?), how you handle the pets (do you hit them or swear at them or give them love), how you handle stressful situations (are you agitated with everyone around you and miserable?), the list is endless, but I believe you get the point, by watching you, they learn to behave and handle other people the way you do.
We all love teaching our children to say please and thank you, it is good manners after all, but when you talk to your child and ask them to bring you something, do you say please? When they brought you something or did something for you, do you say thank you? Remember, they look at what you do.
When you drank cold drink or ate sweets in front of the television, do you leave your glass or sweet wrappers right there next to you? They will do it too, because they think the behavior you show is the right behavior for everyday living.
Children learn through love:
There is one thing that helps children remember the lessons you teach them, it is doing it with love. When you shout at them, they get scared and will close like a book, they will not take in what you are saying.
Also remember, love is in your voice, attitude and touch.
When they see you read:
When your children sees you are reading allot, they realize that reading is important and that you learn through reading.
You can start reading to your children while they are still small and when they are bigger, sit next to them and read stories from interesting books. They must have a time of reading every day, even if it is just before bed time.
I love reading and love reading with my children, as you can see in these pictures, it made an impression:
